Spring Storm of 2011
The Southern US was hit by some 200 tornadoes in April. News reports said the outbreak was considered the deadliest in US history. It battered the south, leaving a swath of destruction that killed nearly 300 people in six states, flattened homes and businesses, and caused billions of dollars of damage. Alabama was the hardest-hit state, with an estimated 213 deaths.
UMCOR has responded with 12 emergency grants to assist affected annual conferences with relief and recovery efforts. Six of the affected conferences requested immediate disaster preparedness training that includes spiritual and emotional care of survivors.
